The Barbican in London is starting an Autumn season of events celebrating the unique culture of Japan, including cinema, theatre, fashion and a ‘Cosplay Extravaganza’.

In their cinema line-up, their are ‘directorspectives’ on Kenji Mizoguchi (Ugetsu Monogatari, The Story of the Late Chrysanthemums, Sansho the Bailiff), Takeshi Kitano (Hana Bi, Zatoichi, Brother, Dolls) and Akira Kurosawa (Throne of Blood, Rashomon, The Hidden Fortress, Seven Samurai). There’s also a season entitled: ‘Girlsworld: women in contemporary Japanese cinema’, which includes Tetsuya Nakashima’s Kamikaze Girls and Memories OF Matsuko, as well as Mika Ninagawa’s Sakuran, Nana and Instant Swamp.

There’s also an exhibition on Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion in the Barbican Art Gallery and a chance to dress up at the Cosplay Extravaganza featuring Cosplay parades, a Goth Loli fashion show, video game tournaments, DJs and performances.
